The New Terminal A Redevelopment Program is a key part of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) major modernization and redevelopment program to position Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to meet the needs of the 21st century. This project was an essential element to this program. Work encompassed the final critical elements to connect the New Terminal A to EWR’s existing roadway, utility, and wayfinding systems. The project which had a final construction cost of $178M, consisted of the construction of three new elevated roadway bridge structures including related abutments, wingwalls, approach roadways, overhead sign support structures, retaining walls, ancillary parking lots, area and roadway lighting, major electrical and electronic infrastructure including an electric bus charging area. Further considering the future and climate changes it may bring, resiliency measures were considered. All electrical and communications equipment installed in the project were elevated to consider future flood elevations. This prevents critical infrastructure elements from being out of operation for significant periods or permanently damaged requiring replacement. In addition, working with PANYNJ planners, the project also included the design and construction for the foundations for the future AirTrain for the New Terminal A. This below grade work needed to be completed while the rest of the New Terminal A roadway system was being constructed because after these improvements are made the below grade work for the future AirTrain would be extremely difficult, if not impossible to complete.
