The New Jersey Turnpike Authority’s Easterly Passaic River Bridge was opened to traffic in January 1952 as the largest Turnpike Authority structure on the original alignment. Today, it is the second largest structure in the Authority’s inventory and carries over 110,000 vehicles per day. The original structure consisted of a painted riveted two girder system which was widened in 1971 through the addition of two welded weathering steel girders. The structure has eight major pin and hanger assemblies in the girders connecting the three-span continuous main river unit to its adjacent spans. As the Authority was completing their most recent deck reconstruction program that included bearing replacement with seismic isolation bearings, inspectors noticed that the major pin and hanger assemblies stopped functioning. This presentation covers the discovery phase, the design phase where a unique solution was developed, and the construction phase where a collaborative team worked to implement this technically challenging solution while resolving unexpected field conditions.
