New Jersey is home to over 3,000 plant species and varieties, of which 850 (26%) are tracked as “rare” plant species by the New Jersey Natural Heritage Program. Rare plant species occurring in New Jersey include six (6) federal-listed endangered or threatened species, 350 State-listed endangered plant species, and 494 plant species of concern. Many of these plants are sun-loving, disturbance colonizing species (e.g., asters, meadow beauties, spiderworts, sedges, etc.) that “can” thrive in open habitat of roadsides and utility rights-of-way (ROWs). Among local botanists, ROWs are some of the best-known man-made habitats to find rare plants.
Davey Resource Group (DRG), formerly Amy Greene Environmental, has performed countless rare plant surveys for linear projects and allowing clients to fulfill either their development or maintenance objectives in compliance with environmental regulations. We will share a number of success stories in which DRG botanists have enabled clients to pursue their objectives despite the presence of rare plants located within their linear development projects.
