ASHE NORTH-CENTRAL NJ PRESENTS:
RUTGERS CENTER FOR ADVANCED INFRASTRUCTURE AND TRANSPORTATION (CAIT) TOUR & DINNER PROGRAM: ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY AND CARBON REDUCTION IN HIGHWAY ENGINEERING
One part of the Tour and presentations will be in the Richard Weeks Hall on Busch Campus. This part of the program will include tours of the Infrastructure Condition Monitoring and Simulation Labs, Intelligent Transportation Systems Lab, and Construction Technologies/Visualization Lab.
The other part of the Tour and presentations of the CAIT labs on Livingston Campus. This part of the program will include tours of the Rutgers Asphalt Pavement Lab (RAPL) and the BEAST (Bridge Evaluation and Accelerated Structural Testing) Facility.
The Dinner Presentation which will follow the tours will be by Hao Wang, Ph.D., M. ASCE- Associate Professor – Infrastructure Engineering.
Highway transport has great impact on environmental sustainability since it is a major source of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable highways can contribute to carbon reduction and climate change mitigation while providing mobility and accessibility. This presentation will discuss how to advancing sustainability and promoting carbon reduction in highway engineering
from multiple aspects. Different techniques to reduce carbon footprint of highway construction materials will be provided. Life-cycle assessment method will be introduced and used to select environment-friendly pavement maintenance strategies to reduce vehicle tailpipe emissions. Opportunities and challenges of using highway infrastructure for promoting electric vehicle adoption will be
discussed.
